Paggi House

All the waitresses at Paggi House were very sweet to Otto.  I was worried about bringing him there since it was sort of fancy, but apparently no one can resist the charm of a little lab…even one who is noisily throwing a heavy bone around.
Dogs are allowed on both the front and back porches. There is plenty of grass nearby and he was offered a pail of water.  The only think inconvenient is that the coffee table-style eating arrangement makes it very easy for a pushy puppy to get at your tasty appetizers.

Updates…a long time coming.

So it’s been awhile but, briefly, here is what has been going on with Otto:

  1. Microchipped - Very cooperative because I let him eat on a Natural Balance roll while they did it.
  2. Neutered - This past Monday.  I wish I had taken a picture of his droopy red eyes after he woke up from surgery.  His stitches get taken out next Wednesday.  It has been really sad/difficult to keep him crated most of this week.  No one told him that he had surgery I guess because he has been trying to play like he doesn’t have stitches. Poor guy. I’ve frozen a thousand bones with wet food in them to give him something to do.  He loves them so much he will voluntarily “kennel up” when he sees them.
  3. AKC Puppy Star- He passed his test Wednesday!  If we send in his form he can get certificate and some other frame-able stuff. He got all sorts of treats as a reward including a stuffed mallard that makes great duck sounds when you squeeze it.
He’s growing in leaps and bounds…all upwards.  As a result he’s a super-skinny guy right now.  Awkward phase. Hopefully I’ll have more pictures soon.  His wigglyness makes it tough.

Vet Visit

Otto got his 2nd round of shots and wormer. As of 2 Friday’s ago he was 20.4 pounds! Also now free of all parasites. (Lovely I know.) While at the Vet his nails were clipped for the first time. I’m still too scared to do it myself since you can’t see where the blood vessel is like you can with cat nails. Next time he goes we can get him neutered…I’m just not sure I want to yet.

He’s now in a super gangly teenager body sort of phase with long legs and all sort of goofiness. Otto is still super mouthy/bitey but we are trying to channel that into some retrieving games. He’s about 2/3 of the way there.  He’s good at getting the object and running back to you.  As part of learning to “share” I’ll trade him the toy for a treat.  Most of the time this works.  Sometimes he’s so excited about the treats he’ll refuse to play fetch anymore and will sit down and look back and forth between you and the treats.

The other bad habit he has developed is barking. He’s found his voice and will bark if he gets impatient, if he needs to go outside, if he gets pissed of, if he would like whatever you have an won’t give him, if you won’t let him do something etc…I think they call this the terrible two’s.

Scavanger Hunt Round 2

  • Statue - He met the lion statue at the public library and couldn’t figure out why I kept trying to get him to look at it.  Maybe it’s too massive for him to tell that it’s anything other than a giant rock or wall.
  • Fire hydrant - He’s super-sniffy with these but I’m sure it’s because other dogs are super pee-y with these.
  • Bus - He is as scared/interested/excited in a bus as he is with other cars. We are working on the treating/sitting as vehicles go by.
  • Police Officer
  • Person with a kite
  • Person on Motorcycle - See bus above.
  • Person with a parka - Um it’s August in Texas.
  • Person with a shopping cart - Met quite a number at HD. Again, who care about a cart when there is a PERSON behind it.
  • Baby Stroller
  • Garden center - I’m not sure what he’s supposed to be intimidated by here. He wants to eat some of the plants, but that’s nothing new. Mainly he just wants to jump on everyone what walks by.
  • Lumber yard in Home Depot - He doesn’t seem to care much about the Home Depot noises.  Again, mainly just wants every single person’s attention. I’ll have to bring him back so that he can hear the fork lift.  Goodness knows it scared the daylights out of me as a kid.
  • Lawn Sprinkler
  • Rolling Trash Can - Sort of wants to attack it and run around it a a little because of the noise it makes.  When it stops rolling he stops.
  • Kid on Trampoline
  • Person on crutches
  • Person in wheelchair - Tries to jump up like he does with other people.  To him it’s just another person that he wants to meet.
  • Person on horseback
  • Vacuum - Attacking, biting, barking.  I leave it out so that he will get used to it but I don’t know that it makes a difference since it’s the sound that makes him crazy.
  • Lawnmower
  • Elevator

    1. Bring a treat or something more valuable than what they have near their nose
    2. When they drop what they have give them the treat
    3. Praise puppy
  • Don’t reward puppy for jumping, remember to only reward the behaviors you want puppy to repeat
  • Scavenger Hunt
  • Have fun with your puppy!
